The price of a ski week varies two-fold depending on the week — and it is not the pass that moves, it is the accommodation. The crowds vary as much. Both follow the French school calendar, which divides the country into three zones whose February holidays overlap across four weeks. Knowing how to read that calendar is worth more than any promotion.
The calendar, and what it does to the resorts
Christmas. The three zones leave together, two weeks. The first — between Christmas and New Year — is surprisingly quiet in many resorts: families celebrate at home. The second, from New Year to the return to school, is one of the two busiest weeks of the winter.
January. Three weeks without holidays, the coldest snow of the year, empty runs and accommodation at half price. The month of skiers without children, retirees and foreigners.
February. Four weeks of holidays, one zone after another, with an overlap in the middle. The two central weeks, when two zones are on holiday, are busy; those at the edges, with a single zone, remain liveable. The official calendar changes every year — our “school holidays” page gives the dates for the current winter and says, week by week, which zones are off.
March. The best month for the snow-price-crowd ratio: up high the snow is still there (our records measure it fortnight by fortnight), the days lengthen, rates fall after the February holidays.
April. The Easter holidays, over two zones, and snow that lies only at the top. Spring skiing has its own article.
What the calendar does not say: foreigners
The Northern Alps resorts host a large share of British, Belgian and Dutch skiers, whose holidays do not follow the French zones. The English half-term week, mid-February, fills Méribel, Val-d’Isère and Les Arcs even when the French have gone home. Belgian and Dutch carnival holidays do the same. On the 3 Vallées and Paradiski, there is no truly quiet week between 1 February and 10 March.
The pass does not move, the accommodation does
On the 59 lists read for 2026-2027, the full adult price is the same all season in almost all resorts. A few show a low-season rate in January and at the end of the season, and the page then states the list’s validity period.
Accommodation is another matter: a flat at €700 a week in January goes to €1,400 in the second week of February. Over a week’s budget, the gap between two dates almost always exceeds the price of the whole family’s passes. That is the reason to choose your week before choosing your resort.
Skiing on weekdays, and on Saturdays
In a purpose-built resort where stays run Saturday to Saturday, Saturday is the day of arrivals and departures: the runs are empty, the lifts run empty, and the car parks are full of suitcases. Regulars ski on Saturday and Sunday morning.
During the week, Tuesday and Wednesday are the quietest days; on Monday everyone takes their first lesson, on Friday everyone does their last day. The half-day pass — read on our pages when the resort sells one — lets you ski from 12:30 to closing, when lessons are over and the morning-groomed runs are still firm in the shade.
